what are the uses of bornite

Jul 01 2017 Bornite Cu 5 FeS 4 is one of the lesser copper ore minerals but its color makes it highly collectible more below Bornite stands out for the amazing metallic blue green color it turns after exposure to the air That gives bornite the nickname peacock ore Bornite has a Mohs hardness of 3 and a dark gray streak.

Bornite

Bornite Bornite often has an iridescent surface and for this reason is popularly known as Peacock ore It is a sulphide mineral composed of copper and iron with the formula Cu 5 FeS 4 It is an important copper ore widely occurring in porphyry copper deposits There can be a wide variance in the amounts of copper and iron and also a wide variance in coloration.

Mineral Sulfides

Sulfide Bornite Cu 5 FeS 4 Other names/forms Peacock ore Most distinguishing features Green blue purple iridescence is indicative as is a brownish bronze colour on fresh surfaces Industrial/economical uses Mined as an ore of copper but not as important as chalcopyrite.

Chalcopyrite or Bornite or Peacock Ore or Peacock Copper

29 06 2016  I ask again is it Chalcopyrite Bornite Peacock Ore or Peacock Copper I DON T KNOW Well ok this is what I ve found some of the confusion lies in the fact that chemically speaking Chalcopyrite and Bornite are sooooooo close hold on nah so I m gonna go science on ya for a moment Chalcopyrite is CuFeS 2 with Bornite being Cu 5 FeS 4 both are copper iron sulfides.

Mineralogy of Sulfides

In addition to the sulfides mentioned above pentlandite Fe Ni 9 S 8 and its alteration product violarite FeNi 2 S 4 are important as the major ore minerals of nickel bornite Cu 5 FeS 4 and chalcocite Cu 2 S as major copper minerals and molybdenite MoS 2 is the primary source of molybdenum.
